Using Stress Management Techniques To Conquor Stress
Feeling overloaded by stress is a byproduct of our modern hectic lifestyle that is hard for many to avoid. Unfortunately, stress has been linked to several very unhealthy conditions including heart disease and a lowered immune defense system. The good news is that there are several ways to help control stress with stress management techniques that almost anyone can perform.
1. One of the best ways to combat stress is to employ some form of meditation. This helps focus the mind on matters other than those that are causing stress. It essentially means that you focus your mind on only one thing for a sustained period. Very often, meditation involves controlled breathing. It can be accomplished by simply sitting in a relaxed position, and breathing deeply in and out, while focusing only on your breathing and nothing else. This is usually practiced for a sustained period of about 15 - 20 minutes.
2. Listening to relaxing music while quieting the mind can be a very stress reducing technique as well. This is especially effective when you may be too tired to focus your mind on meditation at the end of a day.
3. Deep breathing is one of the most popular and most successful ways of relaxing both the body and mind quickly and easily, almost anywhere you are. In order to breathe deeply try to be sure that you breathe from your lower abdomen or stomach, rather than just taking shallow breaths with your lungs. Take long deep breaths and then let them out very slowly. Continue to do this until you feel relaxed.
4. Practicing yoga is another well established way of successfully dealing with stress. Yoga will also help provide deep breathing exercises, but it does much more as it improves body posture, muscle flexibility, and core strength of the body, which promotes overall mental and physical health. You can often find yoga classes very inexpensively in your area, or you can also purchase DVDs or videos that can show you how to practice yoga at home.
Hopefully one of the stress management techniques listed above will work for you, or maybe even a combination of two or more. By employing stress management techniques in your daily life you can improve your mental health and your physical well-being at the same time.
